US Concerned About Persecution…But Only Some Christians
Deutsche Welle reports Nigeria has "fiercely dismissed" US claims of widespread Christian persecution, calling the allegations "unjustified and unwarranted." This while the Nigerian government itself faces accusations from human rights groups of widespread corruption and failing to protect its own citizens, regardless of faith, from violence (Amnesty International's 2023 report highlights state
failures). Of course, this isn't the first time Washington has selectively highlighted religious strife abroad. The concern often seems to peak where it might justify geopolitical maneuverings or arms sales. One might wonder why similar, or even more severe, human rights abuses in countries deemed 'strategic allies' receive a markedly softer diplomatic touch from the State Department. Funny how
