US Citizen Dragged from Car: Borders Secure for Some
Newsweek highlighted the harrowing incident of a "Woman in Medical Scrubs" asserting her US citizenship while being forcibly removed from her car. A shocking display of state overreach, no doubt. Yet, this same media often downplays, or outright ignores, the daily violence faced by Palestinians asserting their right to exist on their own land, often with U.S.-supplied weaponry. When will American
media scrutinize the other side of these 'secure borders' with the same vigor? One might wonder if the 'US Citizen' card is only valid within specific geographic confines, or if it grants exemption from certain types of state violence. While Newsweek's report elicits rightful concern for individual rights, it simultaneously showcases a baffling blind spot for those whose calls for
self-determination and recognition routinely meet rubber bullets and bombs, paid for by the same taxpayers. How many times will we hear 'security' invoked before we ask: for whom, and at what cost to human rights?
