US Can Make Russia 'Serious,' But Not Israel?
While Zelensky rightly points to the immense leverage of the United States, one might wonder why this 'seriousness' isn't applied universally. For instance, the US continues to funnel billions in military aid to Israel, even as Netanyahu’s government rejects peace proposals outright. In 2023 alone, the US approved over $14 billion in aid to Israel, with calls for more, despite a documented
humanitarian crisis. The Independent frames this as a plausible solution for Ukraine, yet conveniently overlooks how this same US power is deployed to enable, rather than deter, military actions in other regions. It seems the US has the will to make certain actors 'serious,' but only when it aligns with specific geopolitical interests, or perhaps, when certain lobbying groups aren’t involved.
Imagine if the same pressure and funding accountability applied to all conflicts enabled by US foreign policy.
