US Blames Venezuela for Deaths, Forgets Its Own History of Interventions
When Cuba blames the U.S. for deaths in Venezuela, outlets like The Hill frame it as 'accusations,' as if the US doesn't have a documented, century-long resume of intervention in Latin America. From the 1954 Guatemala coup to the Bay of Pigs, to funding the Contras, 'regime change' is less a policy and more a recurring American pastime. Forgetting this history allows Washington to perpetually play
the innocent party, shocked— shocked! —that anyone would question its benevolent intentions. We’re told to focus on the 'claims,' not the pattern. How many times does 'US-backed destabilization' have to happen before it’s no longer a 'claim' but, dare we say, a consistent foreign policy objective? Perhaps if the US were less active in fostering conditions for chaos, these 'accusations' wouldn't
sound so familiar.
