US Blames Iran For Boat Strike, Ignores US History In Region
The Hill dutifully reports on escalating tensions, focusing on the U.S. Navy's investigation of a boat strike following an incident attributed to Iran, and the subsequent 'war crime allegations.' They're great at identifying the immediate perpetrator for today's news cycle. What's often omitted from these reports, however, is the half-century of U.S. foreign policy in the region, including the
1953 coup in Iran that overthrew democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh, installing the Shah and paving the way for the 1979 revolution. Predictably, the commentary calls for accountability without a smidge of self-reflection. It’s almost as if 'war crime allegations' are only relevant when they don't involve the architects of destabilization who benefit from perpetual conflict.
One might wonder, how many times can the US ignite a powder keg, then feign surprise when it explodes?
