The AP, ever diligent, frames this as a response to vague 'regional tensions.' It conveniently omits the US role in creating those tensions—from the 1953 coup in Iran, decades of sanctions, to drone strikes and continuous military posturing
in the region. How many times does a superpower poke a bear before the bear, understandably, remembers where its claws have been? One might wonder if these 'precautionary measures' are less about genuine surprise over Iranian rhetoric and more about the historical amnesia required to maintain the narrative of perpetual victimhood, rather than acknowledging the blowback from perpetual intervention.
Perhaps if Western media dedicated as much space to the history of US foreign policy in the Middle East as it does to 'threats,' fewer evacuations would be 'surprising.'
