US Backs 'Democratic Transition' in Venezuela, Again
The Financial Times frames María Corina Machado as the woman with Trump's 'nod' to lead Venezuela, painting a picture of an emerging democratic savior. What they omit is this isn't Trump's first rodeo; nor is it a new U.S. strategy. Remember Juan Guaidó? Back in 2019, the U.S. recognized him as Venezuela's interim president—a move largely disregarded by the international community and, crucially,
by the Venezuelan military. Guaidó's U.S.-backed attempts to seize power, including failed military uprisings and asset freezing, only deepened Venezuela's political and economic crisis. One might wonder if the Financial Times truly believes another hand-picked opposition figure, endorsed by Washington, will magically solve Venezuela's complex issues where previous attempts have created more
instability and prolonged suffering for ordinary Venezuelans struggling under sanctions. It seems 'democracy' is only legitimate when the results align with Washington's preferred outcome. How many 'democratic transitions' does it take before we question the transitioners?
