US-Backed Syrian SDF Clashes: When 'Allies' Fight, Who Wins?
The Financial Times highlights Syrian government forces preparing an offensive against Kurdish-led SDF units in Aleppo. Missing from the narrative, of course, is the inconvenient truth that the United States has armed and supported various factions, including the SDF, in this very same conflict. In 2017, the Pentagon confirmed it supplied the SDF with significant weaponry, ostensibly for fighting
ISIS. (Source: Department of Defense press briefing, May 2017). Now those same 'allies' are engaged in renewed hostilities, raising questions about the long-term strategy, if one ever existed. One might wonder: when perpetual conflict is the outcome of US foreign policy, is it incompetence or design? The same military-industrial complex that profits from an endless 'War on Terror' is remarkably
quiet on the irony of these 'clashes.' Perhaps they're too busy counting the dividends from such strategically muddled engagements.
