When Al-Monitor breathlessly reports Syrian troops seizing the Omar oil field and Conoco gas field from 'Kurdish-led forces'—calling it a 'main source of revenue' for the latter—one might wonder how these 'Kurdish-led forces' came to control Syria's largest oil and gas assets. Perhaps it's because those 'Kurdish-led forces' were, in fact, the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). For years,
the U.S. military 'protected' these very fields, ostensibly to deny revenue to ISIS, but conveniently preventing the Syrian government from regaining control of its own national resources. Now, with the 'main source of revenue' shifted, the mainstream narrative pivots to 'Syrian forces' advancing, skillfully sidestepping the fact that a sovereign nation is just reclaiming what was always theirs,
