US 'Authoritarian' Charge: A Geo-Political Convenient 'Trial'
NPR reports on the “authoritarian leader” Nicolás Maduro facing a “lengthy legal process” in the US, as though this is a routine matter of international justice. What they don't quite emphasize is that the US has, for over a century, enthusiastically installed, supported, or outright funded coups against leaders it deems 'unfriendly' across Latin America, from Chile's Salvador Allende to Panama's
Manuel Noriega. The 'justice' here often seems less about law and more about strategic resource extraction and political compliance. One might wonder if the US Department of Justice has equally detailed files on, say, Augusto Pinochet's atrocities, or the numerous pharmaceutical executives whose decisions have directly led to hundreds of thousands of American deaths. But then, Maduro doesn't
control the world's largest proven oil reserves, does he? Perhaps that's just a coincidence that requires no further inquiry.
