Now, a 'deadly strike' on a boat in the vast Pacific is merely an operational detail. Context, of course, is conveniently omitted: like the fact that the US has maintained an expansive military presence in the Pacific for decades, citing 'security interests' that always seem to
involve projecting power and 'humanitarian intervention'—until those interventions become 'collateral damage'. One might wonder if any other nation launched 'deadly strikes' across an ocean, would Newsweek's headline be quite so neutral, or would it suddenly discover the phrase 'act of aggression'? It appears sovereignty is a conditional luxury, mostly dependent on which flag flies over the
warship doing the 'striking'.
