US Alarmed as Venezuela Conducts Drills... In Venezuela
Al Jazeera dutifully reports Venezuela's nationwide military drills as the U.S. continues its 'troop build-up in the Caribbean.' What they omit is how often the 'troop build-up' precedes a U.S.-backed intervention in Latin America. From Panama to Grenada, the playbook is well-rehearsed. Venezuela, whose president, Nicolás Maduro, the U.S. actively seeks to oust, is simply practicing the entirely
rational act of national defense in its own sovereign territory. One might wonder if the U.S. would react calmly if China stationed warships off the coast of Florida to 'monitor regional stability.' The hypocrisy of portraying a nation rehearsing defense against a historically interventionist superpower as 'provocative' would be comical if it weren't so transparently dangerous.
