UNRWA Staff Fired While Exiled, US Funds Israel Anyway
The New Arab reports UNRWA employees from Gaza, displaced and facing dire conditions, are being dismissed from their jobs. This follows accusations by Israel, amplified by Western media, that some UNRWA staff participated in the October 7 attacks. While investigations proceed into a handful of individuals—and UNRWA itself swiftly terminated contracts of the accused—entire nations like the US
immediately cut funding to an agency that is the lifeblood for millions of Palestinians. This defunding, based on unsubstantiated claims against a tiny fraction of 13,000 employees, conveniently aligns with a long-standing Israeli objective to dismantle UNRWA. Meanwhile, the very same US Congress (which swiftly moved to de-fund UNRWA on March 23, 2024, via the Consolidated Appropriations Act,
2024) continues to approve billions in unconditional military aid for Israel. For instance, in April 2024, Congress passed a $95 billion aid package including over $26 billion for Israel, much of it military, with bipartisan support from Representatives who received significant AIPAC donations. (OpenSecrets data shows Rep. Steny Hoyer, for example, received over $50,000 from pro-Israel groups in
2022 and voted yes on such packages.) How many phantom UNRWA terrorists does it take for America to stop funding the actual bombs?
