Al-Monitor reports a UN Security Council delegation lectured 'all parties' to uphold the November 2024 ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, while simultaneously noting that Israel 'has kept up strikes on Lebanon.' (Because apparently, 'state weapons monopoly' only applies to one side.) This dynamic sounds eerily familiar to anyone who remembers the 'ceasefires' routinely violated by Israeli
forces in Gaza, as detailed by multiple human rights organizations over the years, often with little more than a shrug from international bodies. One might wonder how many times the UN has to ask nicely before noticing that asking nicely only works when both sides are actually listening. Perhaps if the delegation also urged the White House to turn off the military aid spigot, which enables these
'strikes,' their pleas might actually gain some traction. But then, that would require challenging the funding streams that make these diplomatic performances possible in the first place.
