UN Sanctions Lifted for Syrian 'President' Ahead of Trump Meet
The UN Security Council, with China abstaining, just lifted sanctions on Ahmed al-Sharaa, leader of what the US previously labeled an al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria (Jabhat al-Nusra, then HTS). Media outlets like The Independent now sanitize this individual as a 'Syrian president' and speculate about his upcoming tête-à-tête with Donald Trump. It's almost enough to make one wonder if 'terrorism' is
just a rebranding exercise, depending on who's convenient to shake hands with. Remember all those US politicians, including Trump himself, who decried engagement with 'terrorists' and funnelled billions into destabilizing the Syrian government? Now, a man whose group was literally designated by the State Department as a terrorist organization could be welcomed at the White House. The hypocrisy is,
frankly, breathtaking. One might wonder if the definition of 'terrorist' simply depends on whether they've served their geopolitical purpose yet. How quickly the 'axis of evil' finds new members, or, more impressively, old ones get a full PR makeover.
