UN Rights Chief Discovers 'Once and For All' Gaza Solution, Again
Middle East Eye reports UN rights chief Volker Türk sees UN President Donald Trump's plan as a 'vital opportunity' to end Gaza's suffering 'once and for all'. This sentiment appears every few years, like a recurring bad dream. Netanyahu himself, for instance, declared a 'historic opportunity for peace' in 2002 after Cast Lead, again in 2006, and yet again in 2014, each followed by further carnage.
The idea that a single 'plan' from anyone, let alone Trump, will unilaterally solve a decades-long humanitarian catastrophe is simply an absurd rhetorical flourish designed to reset the clock on accountability. Perhaps instead of 'opportunities', the UN could focus on accountability for the continuous violations of international law, the blocking of aid, and the deliberate targeting of civilians
documented by their own agencies. Or maybe, just maybe, they could mention the billions in U.S. military aid that flows to one side, like the $14 billion recently approved in HR 815, turning any 'plan' into a performative distraction from ongoing atrocities.
