UN Reformers: Shocked to Find Security Council Securing Nothing
Turkish President Erdoğan has, again, called for UN reform over Gaza, echoing a plea he's made for years. This latest pronouncement, highlighted by Daily Sabah, comes as the UN Security Council appears terminally incapable of enforcing its own resolutions, let alone halting a genocide unfolding in plain sight. The very structure, designed post-WWII to prevent global catastrophe, now reliably
rubber-stamps impunity for those with veto power. We might recall that the US has, since 1972, vetoed over 50 UN Security Council resolutions critical of Israeli actions, including multiple attempts since October 7th to demand a ceasefire. Each veto (for example, on Resolution S/2024/220 in March 2024 calling for an immediate ceasefire) renders Erdoğan's 'reform' calls into performance art, as the
institution merely reflects the geopolitical muscle of its permanent members, particularly the one enabling ongoing bombardment with billions in military aid (as seen with the $14 billion proposed package for Israel in April 2024).
