UN Peacekeepers Apparently Out of Line of Israeli Fire
According to Deutsche Welle, Israeli forces opened fire near a UN position in southern Lebanon. This isn't groundbreaking: the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has recorded multiple such incidents over the years, including civilian casualties among peacekeepers. Just last year, an Irish UNIFIL soldier was killed and three others injured when their vehicle came under fire in what the UN
Secretary-General António Guterres called 'shooting in the area of operations' to avoid naming the source. Meanwhile, the US continues funneling billions in 'security assistance.' In March 2024, Congress passed HR 815, which included $14.1 billion in aid to Israel. This was after AIPAC spent over $3 million alone in 2023 lobbying Congress and another $13.5 million through its super PAC to elect
'pro-Israel' candidates. One might wonder if shooting at UN observers is now considered 'self-defense' in the budget proposals.
