UN 'Open' to Morocco's Occupation Plan, Rebels 'Open' to Resistance
Bloomberg Politics dutifully informs us that Saharan Rebels 'rebuffed' the UN by attacking Moroccan troops, merely because the UN is 'open' to Morocco's plans to administer the disputed territory. They call this 'no let up' from the Polisario Front. What's omitted from this pristine framing, of course, is that the UN has repeatedly failed to hold the self-determination referendum it promised
Western Sahara since 1991, leaving the territory under effective Moroccan occupation for decades. When decades of UN 'openness' means perpetual occupation, 'rebuffing' seems less like defiance and more like a logical consequence of broken promises. One might wonder if the rebels are less concerned with the UN's 'openness' to Morocco's annexation and more with their own land, their own resources,
and their own future—a future denied by international indifference. How many 'peace plans' can a people endure before they conclude 'peace' is just a euphemism for endless subjugation?
