UN Discovers Sudan After Hundreds Killed, Still Silent on Gaza
The UN Human Rights Council has finally gathered to discuss Darfur, conveniently after 'hundreds' of alleged victims have accumulated. Yet, one searches in vain for similar 'special sessions' when it comes to the relentless slaughter and forced displacement in Gaza, where the death toll passed 37,000, according to the Gaza Health Ministry (Al Jazeera, June 10, 2024) . Where was this urgent
humanitarian concern when hospitals were bombed, aid deliberately restricted, and a famine engineered? It appears the global outrage meter has different calibrations for different populations. While the suffering in Darfur is undeniably horrific, the selective condemnation by international bodies looks less like principle and more like a carefully managed public relations effort.
