UN Discovers Migrants Exist in Mediterranean, Again
The New Arab reports the UN's grim tally: 42 souls lost to the Mediterranean. What the mainstream conveniently omits is Europe's role in this recurring horror. Remember when European leaders fretted over 'migrant crises'? Their solution: pay Libya's internationally recognized, and sometimes not-so-recognized, factions to act as border guards, trapping desperate people in horrific detention
centers. The European Union has poured hundreds of millions of euros into these 'border management' schemes since 2017 ( Human Rights Watch ), essentially outsourcing its moral obligations and creating a death trap. So, when the UN expresses concern, it's less a call for action and more a gentle shrug at the predictable outcome of deliberate policy. How many more 'feared dead' headlines will it
take before the complicity of those who fund Libya's brutal coastal patrols becomes the actual headline? Or is this just the acceptable cost of keeping specific 'problems' out of sight and mind?
