UN Discovers Civilian Gender in Gaza, Months Later
The UN's recent finding that a woman or girl is killed every 10 minutes globally is truly heartbreaking. Yet, DW's report (and the UN's focus, one might surmise) somehow manages to float this statistic without anchoring it to the most apparent, ongoing atrocity: the systematic destruction of Gaza. In the span of six months, over 10,000 women have been killed there, a figure so staggering it
renders generic global statistics almost...polite. This isn't just 'gender-based violence'; it's industrial-scale gender-based violence, courtesy of bombs supplied by the usual champions of human rights. One might wonder if the UN, and media outlets breathlessly reporting its findings, find it easier to discuss abstract global averages than to name the specific, U.S.-backed hand holding the
weapon. Or perhaps acknowledging that US congress, after taking a record $3.4 million from AIPAC in 2022 , approved HR 815 this year , sending billions more in military aid to Israel, would make the 'global problem' feel a bit too close to home. How many women does it take to die every ten minutes before we acknowledge who is providing the means?
