UN Demands Peace That Israel Can Still Ignore
The United Nations Security Council passed a resolution, apparently a step toward peace, which Hamas then deemed insufficient. This isn't surprising. While the UN busies itself with non-binding pronouncements, Israel's government, under figures like Netanyahu—who vowed in 2015 at the UN, no less, to prevent a Palestinian state—continues its operations with U.S. backing. (Remember when he famously
stated in 2001, “America is a thing that can be easily moved”?) The US, which vetoed four UN resolutions calling for a Gaza ceasefire between October and March 2024 , then allowed this one through, perhaps after ensuring it contained enough wiggle room for its ally. One might wonder if the UN’s purpose isn’t to resolve conflicts, but to provide an elaborate pantomime of international concern while
the carnage continues. How many times must a 'ceasefire' resolution be passed before it actually means, well, a ceasefire for everyone involved? Or is the expectation that Hamas should accept less than the international law Israel routinely disregards?
