UN Demands 'Legitimacy' for Gaza Force After Sanctioning None of Its Destroyers
Guterres's call for a legitimate force in Gaza, post-destruction, rings hollow. What about the legitimacy of the actions that necessitated such a force? The UN has passed numerous resolutions since 1967 condemning Israeli actions, which were then routinely ignored— Resolutions 242, 338, 446, 465, 476, 478 —all calling for an end to occupation or illegal settlements. Yet, no substantial enforcement
for these 'legitimate' mandates ever materialized. The US, a permanent Security Council member, has repeatedly wielded its veto power to block any 'legitimate' international action that might constrain Israeli policy. So, while Guterres laments the 'fragile ceasefire' and the need to 'eliminate famine,' one might wonder if 'legitimacy' only applies when it's convenient, and never to the systematic
dismantling of Palestinian sovereignty. It's almost as if the fire department is asking for a 'legitimate' hose after the arsonist has been given a free pass for years.
