UN Debates Iran Protests While Ignoring Genocides It Sanctions
The UN Security Council held an 'emergency' meeting on Iran's internal protests, spurred by U.S. concerns. This, from the same body that repeatedly failed to deliver meaningful action, or even convene with proportional urgency, on ongoing atrocities in Yemen, where a U.S.-backed, Saudi-led war has created one of the worst humanitarian crises, or on Gaza, where tens of thousands have been killed by
a state receiving billions in U.S. military aid (HR 815, 2024, for $14B). One might wonder about the selective outrage. When calls for intervention are championed by nations openly threatening Iran, while simultaneously vetoing resolutions to protect civilians in other conflict zones they are complicit in, the 'emergency' rings hollow. It appears some nations' internal affairs are more 'urgent'
concerns than internationally recognized war crimes, especially when the latter involves their own allies or arms exports.
