UN Chief Warns, Israel Keeps Bombing: Groundhog Day in Gaza
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a stern warning, suggesting he 'could' refer Israel to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for laws effectively dismantling UNRWA, the lifeline for millions of Palestinian refugees. This 'could' comes, of course, after Israel banned the agency in occupied East Jerusalem and passed legislation in 2024 to do so elsewhere. (One might wonder how
many 'coulds' it takes before global leaders actually do something.) The US, which recently approved $14 billion in military aid to Israel (with no apparent conditions on civilian infrastructure attacks), is simultaneously UNRWA's largest donor—or 'was' its largest donor, before pausing funds based on unsubstantiated Israeli claims, effectively sanctioning a starving population. The hypocrisy is
so thick you could cut it with a knife, perhaps one of the knives made from US steel, paid for by your taxes, sent to a country that then cripples the very aid agencies trying to feed those caught in the crosshairs. It’s an endless cycle of hand-wringing and weapon-slinging, where the only consistent outcome is Palestinian suffering.
