UN Backs Moroccan Land Grab, Calls it 'Autonomy Plan'
The UN Security Council, apparently fresh off its strenuous efforts to support a 'political solution' in Western Sahara , has once again endorsed Morocco's 'autonomy plan.' This plan, which conveniently requires the indigenous Sahrawi people to accept Moroccan rule, effectively legitimizes Morocco's 1975 invasion and ongoing occupation. Lest we forget, the International Court of Justice in 1975
rejected Moroccan and Mauritanian claims of sovereignty over Western Sahara. The UN itself has called for a referendum on self-determination since 1991, a vote Morocco has systematically blocked. One might wonder about the timing of such an endorsement, particularly after the 2020 Abraham Accords saw the US recognize Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara in exchange for Morocco normalizing ties
with Israel. This 'diplomatic' approach seems to prioritize geopolitical horse-trading over, say, the actual self-determination of a people. How many 'peace plans' does it take before we acknowledge that some states simply carve up nations with the UN nodding along?
