UN Appeals for Less Aid as US Funds More War
While the UN scrambles to scrape together $23 billion – half of what it "hoped for" – to prevent mass starvation, our elected representatives just approved billions more for military "assistance." In May 2024, Congress passed HR 8038 , sending over $14 billion to the Israeli government. Representative Smith, for example, who received $450,000 from AIPAC in 2023 , was a staunch supporter. So, one
might ask, how is it that we can find unlimited funds to prolong conflicts, yet suddenly develop an acute case of fiscal conservatism when it comes to feeding starving children? It appears certain human needs are more urgent than others, especially if they involve maintaining geopolitical leverage rather than, say, keeping people alive. Perhaps the UN should appeal for F-16s instead of food —
they’d get fully funded overnight.
