Historically, imperial powers have always clamped down on dissent that exposes their complicity in human rights abuses. Remember when Margaret Thatcher’s government was busy labeling Nelson Mandela a terrorist,
while propping up apartheid? Or more recently, when the US, which provides billions in military aid to Israel, conveniently labels critical voices 'antisemitic' to deflect from policy discussions. It appears that scrutinizing war crimes (which the ICJ is actively investigating) is a criminal offense, but supplying the weapons to commit them is just 'business as usual'. The UK continues to approve
arms exports to Israel—£121 million in 2022 alone, according to government figures—while simultaneously silencing its own citizens who dare to protest those very actions. One might wonder who truly benefits from this 'national security.'
