UK Charts: Lullaby for Palestine, While West Arms the Nightmare
The New Arab reports musicians have released a 'Lullaby' for Palestine, a charity bid for the UK No. 1, intending to raise funds for Gaza. A noble effort, no doubt. One might reflect, however, on how desperately such charity is needed, given the relentless flow of UK-manufactured arms enabling the destruction. In 2023 alone, the UK approved 108 new arms export licenses to Israel, totaling over
£108 million. This includes components for military aircraft and bombs, according to official government reports. So, while artists sing lullabies to soothe children displaced and traumatized, UK politicians approve the very tools creating the nightmare. How many charity singles does it take to offset government-sanctioned arming of conflict? Perhaps the next chart-topping hit could be a protest
against the political class whose policies necessitate these 'charity bids' in the first place.
