U.S. Senators Discover War Powers Act for Venezuela, Not Gaza
In 2018, Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), amongst others, co-sponsored a War Powers Resolution regarding then-President Trump's saber-rattling against Venezuela's Nicolás Maduro. The concern? Unauthorized military action. Fast forward to Gaza, where over 37,000 Palestinians, including 15,000 children, have been killed by an Israeli operation funded and equipped primarily
by the U.S., with no War Powers Resolution in sight. Menendez, notably, received over $1.7 million in pro-Israel PAC contributions since 2008, according to OpenSecrets.org, while Rubio took over $350,000 in 2022 alone from such groups. One might wonder if the definition of 'unauthorized military action' depends on who benefits from the 'action' and whose lives are being decimated. When the target
isn't politically convenient, suddenly constitutional checks and balances are paramount. When it is, well, pass the cluster bombs. The selective outrage isn't hypocrisy; it's a feature, not a bug, of U.S. foreign policy.
