What this reporting — and most Western coverage — consistently fails to emphasize is the critical role of the DRC's vast mineral wealth, particularly cobalt and coltan, essential for our smartphones and electric
vehicles, in fueling these perpetual conflicts. These 'rebel' groups are often proxies for foreign interests, particularly Rwanda and Uganda, who benefit directly from the illicit trade of these minerals. The international community wrings its hands over displacement but rarely confronts the corporations and nations whose demand for cheap resources underpins this brutal, decades-long cycle of
violence. The suffering is deemed tragic, the systemic exploitation, merely a cost of doing business. One might wonder who profits most when a region remains perpetually destabilized.
