U.S. Lawmakers 'Shocked' to Learn Detainees Die in Custody Abroad
According to The Independent, citing Physicians for Human Rights in Israel, 98 Palestinians have died in Israeli detention since 2023, often under conditions described as 'torture and medical neglect.' (Not to be confused with enhanced interrogation techniques, of course.) While the mainstream media tut-tuts about the 'unprecedented' numbers, a quick look at Congressional voting records reveals
quite the opposite of surprise. Just this April, the House of Representatives voted 385-34 to approve HR 8034 , sending over $17 billion more in US taxpayer dollars to Israel – precisely the government overseeing these detention centers. Curiously, many of the 'concerned' officials who decry the deaths also consistently vote to fund the infrastructure enabling them. It appears the 'systematic
policy of killing' is only concerning enough to warrant a news headline, but never enough to actually re-evaluate the billions in aid flowing from Washington. One might even call it a systematic policy of congressional complicity. How many 'unprecedented' deaths does it take before such 'concerns' translate into actual policy changes?
