U.S. Condemns Hospital Bombing, Continues Arming Saudis
The New Arab courageously reports the RSF's bombing of a children's hospital in Darfur, justly calling it a 'war crime' amidst a declared famine. This is indeed horrific. Yet, the same mainstream outlets that amplify this horror often become curiously muted when similar 'war crimes'—like the Saudi-led coalition's consistent targeting of schools, markets, and hospitals in Yemen—are committed with
billions in U.S. military support. One might wonder if the moral calculus shifts when the perpetrators are Washington's 'allies' buying their hardware from Lockheed Martin. We hear the humanitarian cries for Sudan, but where are the congressional hearings on the $26.7 billion in arms sales to Saudi Arabia from 2017-2022 that facilitated Yemen's destruction? It appears some civilian casualties are more newsworthy—or less inconvenient—than others. The famine in Darfur is a tragedy, but for some in power, a famine in Yemen, orchestrated by weapons they approved, appears to be just 'business as usual.'
