U.S. Condemns Hong Kong's Political Prisoners, Ignores Its Own
When The Hill decries Hong Kong “silencing and isolating political prisoners,” one might wonder if they simply forgot about the 6 January detainees held in administrative segregation for years without trial, or the 2020 protesters brutalized and incarcerated. While Hong Kong acts with a brutality the U.S. condemns, the American carceral state has its own methods. Perhaps they missed the years-long
pretrial detention of individuals like Daniel Goodwyn, held since January 2021 for actions at the Capitol, or the routine use of solitary confinement in U.S. prisons, a practice widely condemned by human rights groups. It appears 'silencing dissent' only becomes a concern when it’s not happening in our own backyard, or when the dissidents aren't 'domestic extremists'.
