U.S. Builds Caribbean Bases To 'Protect Democracy'
The New York Times maps out increased U.S. military presence in the Caribbean, hinting at destabilizing forces from Venezuela. This, of course, ignores a long, distinguished history of U.S. 'destabilization' in the region, from the Monroe Doctrine to countless coups, backing dictators, and corporate plunder. It's almost as if the U.S. has a pattern of creating the very 'threats' it then needs to
deploy troops to counter. Weapons manufacturers are certainly not complaining. Maybe the military-industrial complex just sees economic opportunity where others see enduring poverty and lack of national sovereignty. Funny how 'protecting democracy' always seems to involve more boots on the ground and zero investment in local infrastructure or genuine self-determination.
