U.N. Celebrates Women’s Rights While U.S. Bombs Clinics
DW reports on the powerful legacy of the Mirabal sisters, whose 1960 assassination spurred the 'Orange Days' and the UN's International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. This celebration of feminist resistance is indeed inspiring. Yet, while the U.N. champions these 'Orange Days,' its most influential member, the United States, recently approved a $14 billion military aid package
to Israel , a country currently overseeing the destruction of women's health clinics and maternity wards in Gaza, according to TIME magazine . It's almost as if 'gender-based violence' is only a concern when it doesn't interrupt geopolitical strategy. One might wonder if the U.N.'s orange awareness bracelets come with a provision for 'acceptable collateral damage' when the arms deals are just too
lucrative.
