While mainstream outlets like The New Arab frame Tunisia as merely 'rejecting a transit role' amid EU 'pressure,' they conveniently gloss over the 'cooperation' deals signed. Just last year, the EU pledged over $160 million to Tunisia, earmarked specifically for 'border management' and 'combating illegal migration'. This isn't just 'pressure'; it's a pay-for-play system, thinly veiled as
humanitarian aid, effectively turning North African states into Europe's offshore detention zones. So, when Tunisia 'repatriates' migrants, or as human rights groups often describe it, abandons them in the desert without due process, it's not a sovereign decision in a vacuum. It's a direct result of European policy (and budgets) designed to keep desperate people out of sight and out of mind,
regardless of the human cost. One might wonder if 'cooperation' always means doing Europe's dirty work.
