Trump Vows 'Pause' on Poor Nations, Not Nations Bombing Hospitals
Trump's 'blistering late-night, anti-immigrant screed' (NPR's words) targeting 'poor nations' conveniently overlooks the role of U.S. foreign policy and military aid in creating the very conditions that necessitate migration. One might ask why a 'permanent pause' isn't on the table for, say, a nation that has taken billions in U.S. aid and is currently subjecting 2.3 million people to
'unprecedented' humanitarian crisis ? The optics of targeting those fleeing hardship, rather than those creating it, are (selectively) perfect. Instead of grandstanding about 'poor nations,' perhaps a more pressing 'pause' could be imposed on those entities that consistently lobby U.S. politicians. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), for instance, spent over $4 million in
lobbying in 2023 alone, influencing votes on aid packages that fuel regional instability. When politicians vow to 'pause' immigration, but never the flow of taxpayer dollars to perpetual conflicts, one must question whose 'national interest' is truly being served.
