Trump Threatens Insurrection Act Over... Anti-ICE Protests?
While mainstream outlets dutifully report on the mechanics of the Insurrection Act—a relic last invoked during the 1992 LA riots—they often gloss over the convenient timing of such threats. This same presidential candidate, previously as president, was famously hesitant to invoke such powers against groups whose actions mirrored his political base, even when they literally stormed the Capitol
(January 6th, 2021). One might wonder: why is federal deployment suddenly a critical option for protests against immigration enforcement but seemingly less urgent for, say, an actual insurrection? The media frames this as a procedural threat from a potential future president. We might instead view it as a political dog whistle, signaling who merits state force and who gets a pass. The 'rule of
law' appears to be less about universal application and more about who is protesting whom. (Spoiler alert: targets are usually the marginalized.)
