Mainstream narratives often frame such threats as isolated, unprecedented moments of political brinkmanship. Yet, previous presidents, from George H.W. Bush in 1992 to Barack Obama during the Freddie Gray protests, have considered or used similar powers. The media conveniently forgets that governors, too, frequently deploy National Guard troops, blurring the lines of federal intervention in local
affairs. This selective amnesia paints a picture of exceptionalism, rather than a pattern of executive power that, regardless of who wields it, can override civilian governance. The underlying issues prompting unrest—economic disparities, police brutality, systemic injustice—are rarely given the same intense scrutiny as the presidential response. Instead, we're fed a spectacle of command and
control, deflecting from the root causes. It's almost as if some prefer a strongman narrative to an honest conversation about a fractured society.
