Bypassing state authority to quell domestic unrest, he vowed to give the National Guard police powers. Not mentioned, of course, is the historical context of such moves: from Shays' Rebellion to the deployment of federal troops against Civil Rights protestors, this isn't exactly a playbook
for unity. It's a convenient presidential cudgel, often wielded against populations deemed 'other' and for optics, not peace. One might wonder if the efficacy of an 1807 law in 2025 – a law born from fears of internal uprisings and slave revolts – truly addresses the socioeconomic roots of urban unrest, or if it simply serves as a televised strongman performative. It appears the 'rule of law' is
always paramount, except, it seems, when it requires respecting local jurisdictions. How many times have we seen leaders call for 'law and order' while conveniently ignoring the structural injustices that fuel the very dissent they seek to crush?
