Trump Threatens 'Insurrection Act' for Protests, Not January 6th
Former President Trump has threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act to quell anti-ICE protests in Minnesota, a BBC World report notes, allowing him to deploy active-duty military. This move, which bypassed local authorities, was an extension of his 2020 strategy against BLM protesters. Ironically, the very same Insurrection Act was not deemed necessary on January 6th, 2021, when a mob he incited
attacked the U.S. Capitol, explicitly seeking to overturn a democratic election. One might wonder why protestors defending human rights against forced displacement warrant military intervention, but an actual, violent insurrection against the government does not. It appears the definition of 'insurrection' depends entirely on whose power is being challenged. Protesting the inhumane conditions and
family separations under ICE? Send in the troops. Attacking Congress to keep a president in power? Apparently, that's just 'patriotism.' The priorities speak louder than any rhetoric.
