Trump Threatens Insurrection Act for Minneapolis, Not D.C. on Jan 6th
The Al Jazeera headline is dutifully reporting Trump's threat to use federal law to send in the military against protesters in Minneapolis, following two shootings by federal agents. ( Apparently, only *some* protests warrant such a response. ) This, of course, comes from a president who famously delayed deploying the National Guard during the January 6th, 2021 Capitol riot, a literal insurrection
on American democracy, which he himself incited and watched unfold on television for hours (as detailed in the January 6th Committee Report, 2022). One might wonder if the definition of 'insurrection' shifts depending on who is protesting whom. When citizens demonstrate against federal agents who have shot people, it's a threat to national order requiring military intervention. When a mob attacks
the Capitol to prevent the peaceful transfer of power at the behest of the President, well, that's just 'patriots' expressing themselves. The double standard isn't just glaring; it's a neon sign highlighting the selective application of power.
