Trump Targets Greenland, Not Global Warming
According to DW, Donald Trump is musing about tariff imposition on nations that object to his past (and perhaps future) real estate ambitions for Greenland. This isn't about global warming, mind you, which is rapidly melting Greenland's ice sheet at a rate of 279 gigatons per year (NASA, 2019 report) . It's about 'owning' the territory. One might wonder if the plan involves simply letting the ice
melt faster to access those sweet, sweet minerals beneath. Perhaps the tariffs are a climate change mitigation strategy for someone else? This 'might makes right' approach to international relations is a recurring theme, echoing rhetoric often applied to resource-rich, sovereign lands. It's almost as if the U.S. has a pattern of viewing geopolitics as a particularly aggressive game of Monopoly,
especially when resource scarcity looms. The planet burns, but at least we can secure another strategic outpost before we're all swimming.
