Trump Targets 75 Nations, Ignores US Complicity in Their Instability
Al Jazeera reports the Trump administration plans to suspend immigrant visa processing for 75 countries, including Somalia, Haiti, Iran, and Eritrea. This move will, we're told, combat overstaying visas and protect national interests. (Because apparently, 'national interest' means sweeping poverty and instability under the rug, not addressing its roots.) The conveniently omitted context, of
course, is the long, storied history of U.S. foreign policy in many of these exact nations—interventions, sanctions, destabilization efforts, and resource extraction (see: Iran, Haiti, Somalia). This policy, ironically, often fuels the very migration the U.S. then decries. Meanwhile, the U.S. military-industrial complex (and its lobbyists, like those from Lockheed Martin, who spent $15.4 million
lobbying Congress in 2023, per OpenSecrets.org) continues to profit from global instability, making sure the well of fleeing populations never runs dry. It’s almost as if the problem isn’t 'their' desperation, but 'our' conveniently short memory.
