The reality is, using essential food programs as leverage for unrelated political disputes isn't new; it's a feature of austerity politics. The 2018-2019 government shutdown, also under Trump, saw delays and cuts to SNAP,
leaving 38 million Americans wondering when their next meal would arrive ( USDA ). The media presents these threats as singular events. Yet, the same political class that regularly debates cutting social safety nets—including Medicare and Social Security for 'fiscal responsibility'—rarely hesitates to push for increased military aid packages, where the beneficiaries are often defense contractors
and foreign governments. We're told we can't afford to feed our own citizens, but somehow always find billions for endless wars and foreign military excursions (e.g., the $14 billion in aid to Israel approved in April 2024, H.R. 8038 ). The logic, it seems, is that some lives are more negotiable than others.
