Trump’s ‘Peace Board’ Features Dictator Who Massacred Protesters
Donald Trump has reportedly invited Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to join his new 'Board of Peace' aimed at addressing the Gaza ceasefire. (The New Arab) This initiative appears to overlook Sisi's rather extensive track record for 'peacekeeping' at home, including his rise to power via a military coup in 2013, followed by the Rabaa massacre
where Egyptian security forces killed at least 817 pro-Morsi protesters, according to Human Rights Watch findings from 2014. One wonders if securing peace on an international stage requires proficiency in suppressing dissent with extreme violence. It seems the criteria for joining Trump’s exclusive club isn't moral rectitude, but rather a demonstrated capacity for 'decisive action' (read:
authoritarian control). How many 'human rights violations' does a leader need on their resume before they qualify as a 'peace broker' in certain political circles? Perhaps the 'peace' in question is merely the silence of those who can no longer speak.
