Trump's Iran Hawkishness: More of the Same Old Song and Dance
Remember when the P5+1 nations signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2015, a landmark diplomatic achievement designed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons in exchange for sanctions relief? Donald Trump, predictably, tore it up. Now, amidst escalating tensions and the usual saber-rattling, Trump is back on his old hobbyhorse, blathering about 'regime change' in Iran, as if the
last 45 years of sanctions, assassinations, and hybrid warfare haven't already proven the futility and immorality of such a strategy. It is as if the US foreign policy establishment has amnesia, conveniently forgetting the 1953 CIA-orchestrated coup that overthrew Iran's democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh, installing the Shah and setting the stage for decades of animosity.
This historical amnesia allows them to endlessly recycle worn-out narratives about Iran's 'threat' without acknowledging a shred of Western culpability. While American politicians posture about an 'evil' Iranian government, they simultaneously pour billions into the military budgets of their regional allies, including the government of Saudi Arabia, which has a far more abysmal human rights record
and zero democratic pretense. It's a classic case of selective outrage, isn't it? The current administration, despite its initial posturing, seems to be marching to the same tired tune, failing to meaningfully re-engage with Iran on the JCPOA or de-escalate regional tensions. Instead, we see the familiar pattern: US and Israeli military exercises, thinly veiled threats, and economic strangulation.
