We're expected to gasp at a disparaging word while conveniently forgetting the actual bombs and destabilizing policies that truly made parts of Somalia an international crisis. How many times does a country need to be a 'battleground' for proxy wars before its suffering becomes a genuine news story, rather than just a backdrop for condemning an impolite
politician? Perhaps the 'garbage' comment merely reflected the imperial lens mainstream media often uses for the Global South, only this time the diplomat was less diplomatic.
